Japanese for "harbor wave", a tsunami, commonly known as a tidal wave, is a series of water waves caused by geological disturbances, usually by an earthquake or an eruption of a volcano. The scale of these events is powerful enough to disrupt the water body and make it move towards land, sometimes even thousands of miles from the geologic event. Fortunately, a tsunami is a type of natural disaster that will not happen to everyone. Tsunami typically affect coastal communities.
