Proper sanitation during a disaster or emergency is critical. Frequently, poor sanitation is the cause of more deaths following a disaster than lives lost in the initial event. The earthquake in Haiti is a great example of this. Not only was the earthquake tough to deal with, it was followed by a horrific cholera outbreak. This deadly outbreak killed thousands of people and hospitalized hundreds of thousands.
